A recent survey sponsored by AAA and Seventeen magazine revealed that 86% of teens admit to driving while distracted. What amazed me were the distractions. Music, food and cell phones. Adults are no less guilty of the same, and I fear we have sent the wrong message to these kids from the very start. We are a generation of muli-taskers, and driving isn't a sacred single-task event.
Think about it. From the time my son was born, I have managed to tend to his needs while driving. Seriously. Is there a mother out there that can't find a binky under the passenger side seat going 60 down the highway with a ba-ba in her other hand for back-up?
I saved my two-year-old daughter's life by using her seat belt as a Heimlich device while cruising down US41 in Sarasota. Lollypops on sticks should be outlawed. They're dangerous.
Anyway, this morning while I was putting on my mascara, simultaneously changing the radio station and drinking my sugar free iced mocha, it occurred to me that I have to start being a better role model.
